For a not-insignificant proportion of the moviegoing population, the most pressing question about Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk isn’t “Is it good? ” but “How is Harry Styles in it? “
The former One Direction member induces his acting debut in the World War II epic, playing one of the young soldiers on the ground. It goes without saying that the track records of musicians trying to act is very, very mixed, and by all accounts Dunkirk isn’t much of a character piece.
So it’s a succour to hear that Styles is actually quite good in the movie for as long as he’s in it, anyway.

After our screening, there was a group of teen daughters huddled outside the AMC Lincoln Square on Manhattans Upper West Side, asking anyone who had just seen Dunkirk about Harry Styles performance and, more particularly if Mr. Styles character perished or not. I am immensely curious what this group will think of Dunkirk because its not really an actor-driven cinema. Even though the implementation of its are all great( including Mr. Styles ), we barely get to know any of these people. Styles shows up and is utterly frightened for his life, like pretty much everyone one else in this movie. But this certainly isnt a Harry Styles movie or a Tom Hardy movie.

I think it’s fair to single out Harry Styles’ performance for analysis here as, candidly, Nolan brought it on himself by casting him( even if he underestimated the singer’s notoriety ). Yes, Styles is very competent and his performance does not stick out like a saw thumb as many feared; you instantly except him as a soldier alongside the infinitely less recognisable others. He doesn’t exactly have any especially challenging scenes, but he is solid and takes the job severely and I suppose, for better or worse, many produce feature film roles will follow if he craves them, given the immediate box office injection that comes with his casting.

Tommy and an ever-growing band of would-be escapees( including Alex, played by Harry Styles in a confident screen debut) find themselves going from one frying pan to another burn, as each ship that seems like it might save them becomes the target of the enemy. … Whitehead and Bonnard( and Styles, for that matter) have the kind of striking faces that, with the help of Van Hoytemas lens, allows them to stand out in a mob of soldiers all sporting the same uniform and haircut, and their eyes transmit volumes as they face certain demise over and over again.

Harry Styles can actually act: Awarded, Harry doesn’t have that many lines in Dunkirk, but then , nobody does in this near-silent, highly tense conflict film. It very quickly becomes apparent, following a mesmerising shoot-out scene starring Fionn Whitehead( more on him in number 3 ), that the nearly 400,000 humen stranded on the coast of Dunkirk were too stunned to say much. Comparatively speaking, then, Harry Styles plays one of the more outspoken soldiers, capably demonstrating both depth and a survivalist instinct that hangs his character right on the line between human and inhumane. He likewise shows off some swimming abilities. “I definitely improved my float while shooting this movie, ” he mentioned. “But we couldn’t genuinely focus on any personal inconvenience due to the history we were portraying.”

The performers do brilliantly with relatively little in accordance with the rules of dialogue. The cast of unknowns are obliging, with Harry Styles handed some of the more dramatic scenes which he handles with skill beyond his experience. He can definitely act.

Both Murphy and Hardy have worked with Nolan before( each as Batman villains ), but he uses them in character-actor mode here, treating these marquee flairs as equals among a casting of newcomers( including Harry Styles, seeming every bit the 1940 s matinee idol ).

In his first major film role, One Directions Harry Styles proves tremendous promise. His Alex makes one of the films most apparent metamorphosis, dipping in and out of fright, desperation, and anguish.
